There’s nothing quite like rolling into Sturgis, South Dakota during bike week. The rumble of thousands of engines, the smell of exhaust in the air, and a town that transforms into one giant celebration — it’s an experience every camper and rider should have at least once. We spent Friday and Saturday night soaking it all in, and here’s how our trip went.

Setting Up Camp at Hog Heaven
We based our whole trip out of Hog Heaven Campground, and it did not disappoint. It’s got that laid-back, biker-friendly vibe you want during rally week — easy access to the main Sturgis action, friendly neighbors, and just enough amenities to make tent or RV life comfortable after a long day of exploring. If you’re looking for a home base that puts you close to everything without the chaos of being right downtown, this is a solid pick.

True to form, we set up our hammocks again for this trip — it’s our favorite way to camp, hands down. There’s something about swinging between two trees instead of sleeping on the ground that just makes every trip better, and Hog Heaven had plenty of good tree cover to make it work.

One thing worth noting: a red flag warning was in effect during our visit, which meant a burn ban was enforced and no campfires were allowed. It’s a good reminder to always check local fire conditions before you go, and to pack accordingly.

A Midday Stop at Bear Butte
Before diving into the noise and energy of the rally, we took some time to visit Bear Butte around noon, just a few miles outside of town. This place is a striking contrast to the bike week buzz — a sacred site for several Native American tribes, with sweeping views from the summit trail that stretch out over the Black Hills and the plains beyond. It’s a great reminder to slow down, and honestly, the hike up was a nice way to stretch our legs before a weekend of concerts and crowds.

Refueling at Canyon Grill
After working up an appetite at Bear Butte, we stopped by Canyon Grill to refuel, and it hit the spot. The food was great, and the atmosphere matched it — a relaxed, welcoming spot that made for a perfect break between the quiet of the butte and the energy still to come that weekend.

Saturday at Buffalo Chip: Bare Knuckles and Loud Guitars
Saturday was all about Buffalo Chip, and it did not disappoint. Known as one of the most iconic gathering spots during bike week, it’s packed with live music, vendors, and an atmosphere you really can’t find anywhere else — and this year it delivered two of the biggest highlights of our whole trip:
BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) — Watching this live was intense. There’s a raw energy to bare knuckle fighting that you just don’t get from other combat sports, and the crowd was fully locked in for every round.
Megadeth in concert — Catching a legendary thrash metal band like Megadeth as part of the Buffalo Chip lineup was the perfect way to cap off the night. The energy of the crowd combined with decades of metal history made for an unforgettable show.
Having both events at the same venue made for one seriously packed, seriously unforgettable Saturday.

Final Thoughts
Two nights wasn’t nearly enough to see everything Sturgis has to offer, but between Bear Butte’s quiet beauty, the wild energy of Buffalo Chip, a night of bare-knuckle action, and rocking out to Megadeth, we packed in an incredible amount of experience into a short trip. Staying at Hog Heaven Campground gave us the perfect basecamp to come back to each night before doing it all again.

If you’re planning your own bike week trip, our advice: book your campsite early, wear comfortable boots, check for any active burn bans or fire restrictions before you pack, and be ready for very little sleep — Sturgis doesn’t slow down, and neither will you.
